Microsoft to buy Skype

10th May 2011 by Alex Davies | News & Events

The software company Microsoft is soon to be completing its purchase of Skype, with the deal said to be close to $8.5 billion.

What is Skype?

Skype is a software application that allows users to utilise their internet connection to make free calls. If a user has a webcam available, they are also able to connect to friends or colleagues via video.

Why Skype?

We believe Microsoft sought after purchasing Skype due to smartphones and tablets greatly increasing in popularity. This will mean Microsoft can offer additional benefits over its competitors. In addition, due to the fact that Skype allows users to make free phone calls, there is potential for Microsoft to expand into the video conferencing market since business users now seek cheaper mediums of communication.

The Skype deal, which will be the biggest purchase of the world’s largest software company, is expected to be announced early next week.
